My exhibition of recent paintings at Propeller Gallery in Toronto ended yesterday. Thanks go to Nathan and everyone else at Propeller who made things easy. An artist feels support in many ways. Not everyone, of course, is able to make a purchase. Artists understand that but really appreciate a good turnout. My thanks go to all of you who attended the opening reception or visited the show at another time. It was Canada Day weekend and I know it took a special effort from many of you.
I received compliments from many of you and every word is valued. I was particularly pleased to receive the very positive feedback from my creative peers. Those words are priceless.
I’ve added a few installation shots to this post. If you’d like to read my artist statement and view all of the work from the exhibition, click here or on the Propeller page under the Pages menu in the sidebar on the right.

WALLACE AVENUE
Patrick Donohue has reviewed the Salon V exhibition at Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts on his popular website, Dilettante’s Diary.
Patrick made the following comment about my mixed media piece, WALLACE AVENUE:
“In a more urban mode, an exuberant Cubist-influenced painting caught my eye with its vivacious take on a city neighbourhood, even before the name of an artist I know caught my eye: Barry Coombs.

I’ve been invited to exhibit with Salon V at the Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts.
Wallace Avenue is a work on paper using watercolour, resist, acrylic ink and acrylic paint. In other words, mixed media.
The exhibition will run from January 12 – 30, 2011. Propeller is located at 984 Queen Street West in Toronto. All are invited to the Opening Reception this Thursday evening, January 13, from 7 – 10 pm.
Aleda O’Connor (my partner) will be exhibiting three of her lovely drawings in pen and white charcoal pencil on toned paper.

The Salon Show at Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts ended today. My partner, Aleda, and I dropped by the gallery to pick up our work. My piece was hanging where I’d last seen it but Aleda’s drawing was missing! Much to her surprise, but not mine, she had sold it.
I don’t have an image of her piece from the exhibition but here is a similar recent work. She uses pen and white charcoal pencil on toned paper.
The show was reviewed by Patrick Donohue on his website at http://dilettantesdiary.com./. Patrick is an accomplished artist and an insightful writer. He mentioned several artists in the exhibition.
These are his comments about our work: “Aleda O’Connor’s ink and pencil drawing highlights the neglected beauty of an aspect of the city that confronts us all the time: an industrial-looking stairway. Among the cityscapes, I’ll include Barry Coombs’ intriguing street lamp: a fractured composition that clearly reflects his interest in cubism.”

Happy New Year. I’ve been invited to exhibit in the 2010 Salon Show at the Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts.
I’m submitting STREETLAMP, shown here. This may surprise those who know my watercolours. It’s a recent mixed media work on paper. The imagery is based initially on observed cast-shadow shapes in an urban environment. Watercolour, acrylic ink and paint and collage and resist are the media employed.

The Salon Show runs from January 3-17, 2010. Join us at the Opening Reception on Thursday, January 7 from 7-10 pm. Propeller is located at 984 Queen Street West in Toronto. It can be contacted at 416-504-7142.
