Grand Manan Art Gallery – Talk and Exhibition

05/08/2015

IMG_2424

I’ve enjoyed a rewarding association with the Grand Manan Art Gallery for several years. One of my watercolours, Ross Island Light, is in the Permanent Collection and I’ve contributed work to the last two annual Square Foot shows. This summer, I wanted to celebrate my 25th anniversary of painting and teaching on the island and offered to do an illustrated talk at the gallery. The GMAG had never hosted an artist talk before but the Board accepted and I prepared a one hour PowerPoint presentation which I gave to an audience of over fifty people last Thursday evening.

One of the works I showed during my talk was the FUNDY GEM, a small watercolour that I painted outdoors on the wharf in North Head in 1992.

Over the past winter, I decided to submit a new work to the annual Island Art Show, which runs from August 8 – 27. As I was preparing my talk, I took a fresh look at the FUNDY GEM watercolour of 1992 and I thought that the cropped composition and the attention to the mechanical elements of the fishing boats reflected my longtime passion for Cubism. I decided to re-visit the earlier watercolour and painted a new acrylic on canvas. If you’re on Grand Manan Island, drop by to see the new incarnation of the FUNDY GEM and all the other wonderful work by a wide range of artists. Opening night is this Saturday, August 8, at 7pm.

Summer Salon Show at Yumart

DOLORES HIDALGO by Barry Coombs

DOLORES HIDALGO
by Barry Coombs

“…and the livin’ is easy…”.
I’m pleased to be exhibiting three of my drawings this August at yumart, “a new art venture located in the heart of Toronto’s fashion and entertainment district, steps away from fabulous 401 Richmond and “art at 80″ on Spadina. A unique retro low-rise building, yumart is situated on the 2nd floor of 101 Spadina Avenue on the southeast corner of Adelaide and Spadina.” Thirty artists are participating in the exhibition.

DOLORES HIDALGO is a work on paper with resist, acrylic ink washes and pen. Some of the geometric shapes are arbitrary but the dark purple shape is a carefully-observed study of the core and cast shadows of an architectural feature from the town of Dolores Hidalgo in Mexico.

The Opening Reception is this Saturday, August 10 from 2:00 – 5:00 pm. Contact yumart at info@yumart.ca for information. The gallery is open from 12:00 – 6:00 pm, Wednesday to Saturday.

Who to see at TOAE this weekend!

04/07/2013

Ian Mackay at TOAE

The 52nd annual Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition is on this weekend at Nathan Phillips Square in downtown Toronto. There’s always lots of great art to see and some of my friends will be exhibiting.

Ian Mackay and I have known each other for a long time and his studio is across the hall from mine. His block paintings, as seen in his promotional card here, are intriguing and unique. He’s at booth Yellow 220.

Dominique Prevost loves paper and her beautiful work is definitely worth a look. Her booth is Yellow 310.

Victoria Pearce is at booth Yellow 343. She’s featuring her new ‘suspended nest’ paintings.

Good luck to them all and may the weather gods smile upon the event.
