Sketching and Watercolour Painting
September 11 – 26, 2014

*** WAITING LIST  Cancellations do happen! Would you like to be added to the waiting list for this special trip?

Lucca is a beautiful, walled city west of Florence. The walls themselves are a tree-lined park and offer great views of the city. Pedestrians rule inside the walls as only service vehicles are allowed. Inspiring painting sites will be plentiful in Lucca and its’ proximity to Florence, Pisa and other historic towns makes it an excellent base for our workshop. We visited Lucca in 2006 and enjoyed a very successful and rewarding painting holiday. It’s definitely time for a return trip.

Our workshop focuses on watercolour painting, pen and ink sketching and pen drawing with wash. This workshop is for participants with some previous experience in their chosen medium. Participants working in other media are very welcome, as are non-painting partners and friends. Demonstrations, individual attention and constructive critiques are essential elements of this creative learning experience. A reasonable level of physical fitness will be necessary. Walking and stairs (those walls!) will be unavoidable although art materials can be packed on an airline-style wheeled trolley and taxis can be used at times. The workshop has been planned so that car rental is unnecessary and impractical.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN? Barry has extensive teaching experience and is able to bring out the best in artists of different levels of skill and experience. He will introduce participants to new ideas and approaches to plein air painting and is very well-known for his insightful critiques. His solid grounding in the traditional fundamentals of drawing, watercolour technique, colour and composition benefits all participants. His own watercolours, featured in the April 2013 issue of the UK’s Leisure Painter magazine, are colourful and playful and loosely inspired by Cubism. At some point in every workshop, he will discuss his recent work and is quite happy to provide guidance to anyone interested in trying this fascinating creative process.

A graduate of the Ontario College of Art, Barry Coombs has led workshops in Ontario, Quebec and Maritime Canada for over twenty years as well as many international painting holidays in England, Italy, France, Greece and Mexico. Barry exhibits his work locally and internationally and represented Canada at the G20 World Artist Festival in Seoul, South Korea in 2010.

Our carrier is Air Transat and we will travel direct from Toronto to Rome. We will be picked up at Rome Airport by our private bus for the drive to Lucca. We will be staying at the three-star Hotel Rex which is within very convenient walking distance of the town centre, allowing us to enjoy the evening passeggiata. The Rex has received excellent reviews for it’s service, it’s buffet breakfast and it’s quiet rooms. We were very happy with it in 2006.

We will benefit from the services of a full-time guide and translator for our entire stay in Lucca. There will be nine days of organized workshop activities which will include painting in Lucca and vicinity and guided day trips with our own transport. The first and final full days will be free time as well as the weekend of September 20-21. Are you interested in a side trip on the free weekend or additional excursions? Jim Nikiforos at Marlin Travel will be pleased to assist you with any arrangements.
