Barry Coombs work at DVSA gallery is inspired by cubism

Barry Coombs taught drawing and watercolour painting at the Dundas Valley School of Art (DVSA) for 20 years. He’s back at the DVSA Gallery with his solo exhibition, UNDER CONSTRUCTION, a collection of playful and colourful gouache paintings and cardboard relief sculptures that continues until October 11.

Coombs, who now lives and works in Hamilton, is usually associated with watercolour painting. “A few decades ago, my passion for Cubism and early modernist movements found its way into my watercolours. My paintings are not really Cubist but are inspired by this exciting period,” he says.

In April 2013, his work was Featured in the Britain’s best selling ‘learn to paint’ magazine, Leisure Painter as well as Hamilton’s Interiors magazine.

Most of the works on paper in the Dundas show were painted with gouache, a water-soluble, opaque paint. Two years ago, during a visit to an outport on Newfoundland’s Bonavista peninsula, Coombs completed a series of gouaches. “Prior to that trip, I’d dabbled in gouache but never put together a body of work. The opacity of gouache was a refreshing change from my transparent approach to watercolour painting,” he says. “More recently, I’ve enjoyed using gouache to explore ideas about shape, shadow and colour.”

A number of the subjects in the current show are drawn from specific locations such as the back of the former Jade Garden restaurant and Sunrise Fish and Chips, both in Hamilton.

His explorations are evident in this new body of work. “I decided to call this exhibition UNDER CONSTRUCTION for several reasons. One is a respectful nod to Kazimir Malevich and the Constructivist movement of the early 20th century. Another refers to the process used in making my cardboard reliefs. Also, my Oxford dictionary tells me that construction can be used as a synonym for interpretation.”

DVSA is located at 21 Ogilvie Street in Dundas Ontario. It is open from Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4p.m.
