Sustained Saturday Watercolour Class – February 20!

Every once in a while the teddy bears break out of their boxes. On Saturday, they managed to find some kid-sized chairs and were waiting for us when we arrived at the Arts on Adrian studio for our day of watercolour painting.

The bears, plus a few rabbits, a dog and a monkey, insisted that I do a demonstration (they’re a bit vain). I chose to use soft-edge techniques starting with a light wash and touching in a darker value while it’s still wet. I left gaps between the shapes on the green bear. They look like white lines and they show how I painted the various shapes separately. This made the shapes more manageable and more suitable for the soft-edge technique.

The chairs added a perspective element to the challenge. Some of the students focused on studies of individual critters and others developed some very solid compositions. This was our last Sustained Saturday of the winter term. I’ll be posting my Spring Studio Calendar soon.
