Lucca, Tuscany 2014 – We’re here!

Hotel Rex

We’re back in Lucca at the Hotel Rex. Our last visit was a long time ago and it’s great to be here again. After the usual grueling flight, we arrived to a warm welcome. As it turned out, the welcome banner was made by George, one our artists who had arrived a few days ahead of time. Still, it was a sight for tired eyes!

Lucca is a walled city and it’s beauty and relaxed pace make it an ideal painting and sketching destination.

The walls are very wide and used by pedestrians and cyclists. I gathered the group on the morning of our first painting day and demonstrated. I did a fairly relaxed watercolour sketch and used it to discuss some of the visual elements we’ll be encountering while in Tuscany.

Over the course of the day, I visit the participants to offer feedback while they work. In addition to that, I did three sketches with pen and watercolour. Later on, I presented them to the group. The first sketch was done in three steps. Pencil was first followed by the watercolour. I added the penwork last.

My second sketch was drawn with pencil before I added a sepia wash to establish shadows. Pen was added last.

The third study was done with an extra step. First, pencil and then a cool bluish grey wash to establish the light and shadow. Once dry, I added local colour. The final step, as in the other drawings, is the pen.

Our first day wrapped up with a critique at the hotel. I had stressed sketching and working small. It’s important to familiarize oneself with a new place before embarking on ambitious, sustained works.

Today, we visited Villa Volpi in the hills north of Lucca. The views were spectacular and we were given a fabulous lunch (with lots of wine).

The wine proved to be inspirational! A lot of fine work was done and we looked at everything back at the Hotel Rex. We’ll be painting in Lucca again tomorrow. Stay tuned for more photos of a gorgeous city and our creative interpretations.
