Spring Tuesday Watercolour Class – Week Five

Still LIfe - SpringTuesWk5/2014

These old metal objects were so much fun on Saturday that I couldn’t deny the Tuesday painters the opportunity to paint them. The spouts and handles are an enjoyable drawing challenge. The distressed metal surfaces are a reasonably forgiving subject for watercolour.

I did a light preliminary drawing in pencil for my demonstrations. The washes were painted with a #8 round brush. I deliberately left the white of the paper for the lightest areas. As I did on Saturday, I used a triad of three colours; Rose Madder Quinacridone, Cobalt Blue and Raw Sienna.

I really stressed the importance of thin, luminous light areas. It makes a real difference in the work, especially the paintings with darker backgrounds. Many of them really glow!
