Sustained Saturday – Watercolour and More!

Still Life-WinterSat2/2014

This is a different view of our still life from last Tuesday. My demonstration sheet is very similar to what I did for the classes on Tuesday, as well. In general, I worked ‘light to dark’ and ‘big to small’. We talked about giving fullness and volume to these seemingly flat objects.

There’s nothing glamorous about these everyday mittens and socks and that’s what makes them a good painting subject. It’s hard to get precious with this prosaic collection of winter kid stuff.

Watercolour Demonstration by Barry Coombs - WinterSat2/2014

As usual on a Saturday, some spend the entire day on a single image while others do two or even three pieces. Most work in watercolour and a few use pen and ink or pen combined with watercolour. What you don’t see are the thumbnail sketches and the study sheets that contribute so much to successful work.

It’s freezing out. Someone should be wearing those socks and mittens!!!

What a great subject for colour! Nice primaries and mixed neutrals bottom right , middle row use of secondaries, and the restful greens in top row.
