Tuesday Watercolour Class – Week Five

Still Life - WinterTuesWk5/2014

Wiarton Willie, our local groundhog-savant, declared six more weeks of winter the other day. My watercolour students have only FIVE more weeks of winter. Creative people have all sorts of advantages.

I love a still life with a jumble of shapes and colours. We discussed the various elements together. Many of these socks and mittens appear to be quite flat but they’re not. Using soft-edge techniques and graded washes, I tried to give them a sense of fullness and volume.

Another theme of my demonstrations was a traditional ‘light to dark’ andĀ  ‘big to small’ approach. For example, the sock on the upper right was painted with the light colour throughout the shape. When dry, the dark blue was painted and the heel and toe appeared lighter. The black trim on the lunch bags was painted last and right over the red or blue of the bag.

There have been a lot of white landscapes and grey skies around here lately. The vibrant colours of today’s watercolour paintings were very cheerful and optimistic, regardless of which winter prediction you choose to believe.
