Sustained Saturday – Watercolour Plus!

Still Life - WinterSat18/1/2014

Bottles again! These dusty bottles didn’t elicit the most enthusiastic sounds from the students as they entered the studio in the morning. Little did they realize what a great subject they are! What is more recognizable than the shape of a bottle? No jokes, please. A simple silhouette is enough to convey an object as culturally ubiquitous as a bottle. So…

Why not trust the shape and play a bit with the watercolour? We discussed different ways of painting shapes and making marks. Whether attempting a carefully observed, optical rendering of the bottles or a more experimental, expressive treatment, a good vocabulary of brush-handling skills is a definite asset.Watercolour Demonstration by Barry Coombs - WinterSat18/1/2014

By the way, a punt is the indentation in the bottom of a wine bottle.

Some of the students completed pen drawings as well as works combining pen and watercolour. There’s always lots of energy in the studio on a Saturday and yesterday was no exception.
