Mevagissey, Cornwall

Megavissey - Watercolour studies by Barry Coombs

We’ve been staying in Cornwall for the last week, sharing a lovely cottage with friends. Our trip is almost over but we had a few days left to explore. Yesterday, we washed up in Mevagissey and it’s so spectacular we decided to stay an extra night and get in a day of painting.

This morning, I climbed up to a shady spot on the inner breakwater and got out my watercolours. I jumped straight in with the brush and completed this sheet of ‘shape-read’ studies. Skipping the pencil step is a challenge but I really enjoyed the concentration and the brush-handling.

We’re staying at a lovely hotel and this is the view from the terrace. Not bad, eh? I highly recommend the Mevagissey Bay Hotel.

Here are a few more shots of Mevagissey. England has been everything we had hoped for, from Farncombe Estate in the Cotswolds to the peaceful isolation of Porthgwarra and the light and colours of Mevagissey. It’d put a smile on anyone’s face.
