Newfoundland – We’re Here!

We made it! It was a fifteen hour ferry ride from North Sydney, NS to Argentia, NL. Rather than head straight to the Trinity Bight area, we went in the opposite direction and stayed for two nights at the Bird Island Resort in St. Bride’s. As you can see, it has a very scenic harbour and the men are currently fishing for monkfish. We enjoyed sketching the boats.

The mini-putt at the resort is perched on a cliff with stunning coastal views. I’ll have to re-think dories, however. Just when I thought I could draw them I came upon this one.  I may have to start all over.

Down the road from St. Bride’s is the Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve. The Reserve is home to tens of thousands of nesting seabirds but the main attraction are the Northern Gannets. Last year, we visited Cape St. Mary’s and it was even foggier than it was this time. It was still exciting to sit on the top of a rocky cliff and watch the Gannets feed their chicks.

Walking a mile each way to view the Northern Gannets works up an appetite and that calls for lunch at the Gannet’s Nest. Fortunately, the restaurant smells a lot better than the bird island, the people are lovely and the moose soup was delicious.

General sight-seeing is a must and it’s always rewarding to wander up and down the sideroads, stopping to nibble on wild blueberries and raspberries. We hadn’t seen a single wooden lobster pot on Grand Manan Island recently but they are still in wide use here.

Our workshop begins soon. Some of the participants have already arrived. It’s time to head out and do some reconnaissance. More from Newfoundland soon.

15 hours on a ferry! Yikes. I hope you don’t get seasick. Looking forward to your next painting workshop. Enjoy.
