Sustained Saturday Watercolour Class

Thanks for your comments on my 10,000th view. It was back to work today with many of the Saturday regulars. We talked about a few things to get started such as mixing darker values of yellow and orange and how to handle reflections.

I must have had too much coffee from the look of the lopsided blue bowl (below). You’re seeing a white plate and some more oranges reflected in it’s surface, not a double-yolk fried egg.

Reflections can be very attractive elements in a painting but remember that they are just a part of the overall image and have to be in the proper tonal relationship to the neighbouring objects. I find that they work best when they are a bit darker than the lightest areas of the objects that are being reflected. This establishes a strong relationship that can be very convincing.

It’s tricky when a white object is being reflected because one doesn’t want to lose the whiteness by going too dark. I lightened the upper area of the orange (left) by using a very thin wash. If that part of the orange isn’t translucent then I’d need to darker the white reflection even more.  Do I need to do that here? Possibly. A slightly darker cool grey wash over the white, orange and yellow reflections could make all the difference.

It’s a real painting challenge but the Saturday painters were undaunted. As you can see, they did some great work today.

Remarable work! Are your students professionals? I am always amazed at their talent (or your teaching ability!)

Several of them exhibit their work. Actually, Pat Mcc (middle row, second from left) has a show opening tomorrow. We’ll all be there supporting her. I’m fortunate to have such dedicated students. Thanks again for your comments.

Barry – just saw your reply to lindahalcomb – nice! Also, thanks for not posting Tuesday’s flowers (mine at least) on the blog.

Stephen: Thanks for all of your recent comments. Last I checked, Pat MacC’s show was going very well. We have two Pats in our morning class and the other one, Pat L, is currently exhibiting in a group show. I saw it yesterday and her series of barn paintings was colourful and attractive.
