Tuesday Watercolour Class – Week One

The pencils were sharpened and the palettes were loaded yesterday as Fall term began at my studio. I’m planning to try some different approaches with my demonstrations over the next few weeks. We discussed the figure/ground concept, in this case the relationship between the pears and the elements around them.

In the first step of the morning demo (below left), I painted a varied blue wash over almost all of the sheet. I left the pears white and a few bits of white in other spots. I then added yellow to the pertinent areas. This approach immediately emphasized the pears.

The second step (above right) was used to develop the blue objects and fabric. I wanted to keep them simple, even whimsical. Some more work was done on the pears, as well.

I suggested that the students try two small pieces side by side and enjoy the process without too much concern about product. As you can see below, some did two and some did one. Either way, it was a great start to the term.
