Cubist Watercolour Workshop-more student work

The Willowdale Group of Artists workshop took place last fall. I’ve already posted work from Mary Foord and Katherine Frech and here’s a piece from John Becker.

John’s breakfast scene abounds with playful visual elements. The use of collage (we are being coolly scrutinized by that face) and the spilled liquid give it a surreal feel. The yellows and cool reds interact with the greens nicely but the subtle tans and browns really appeal to me.

John could have eliminated a few shapes in this painting and varied the size of the shapes to a greater degree. He didn’t submit his value study and I don’t recall it but the finished work could use a stronger pattern of dark middle tones. A simpler statement would have been more effective.

I enjoy this watercolour. Sometimes, it makes me chuckle and other times it gives me a chill but it never bores me. The final word here goes to John. These are his suggested titles:

‘The Morning After’ or ‘Thoughts in the First 8 Milliseconds of Wakefullness’ or ‘My First Attempt at Cubist Painting’ or ‘Pure Fun’.
